Overview:
The château is located between Gourdon and Sarlat. One cannot help but fall under the charm of the domain as soon as one crosses the dry moat. The original medieval château was built circa 1440 and served as a defensive structure to protect the inhabitants against the British after the 100 Years War. The castle was modified during the 16th and 17th centuries and the current château dates to the early 20th century with cellars from the 17th century. The domain is set on the edge of a picturesque and relatively unknown medieval village with easy access to all local amenities.
History:
According to local legend there are underground tunnels linking the domain to the châteaux of Gourdon, Rocanadel, Masclat and Fenelon. During the French revolution the vendor threw golden keels in the well to collect at a later date, he never came back and they remain unfound. The original castle was burnt down during the revolution in a protest over corn. The subsequent château has taken its place and offers a more open and welcoming feel. Perched on top of a cliff facing due south and west this château is unique not only in its positioning but also in its rich heritage.
The Condition:
The owner has restored the main house up to ‘finishings’. The buyer will have a clean slate from which to work. The main house has been connected to town water, television, electricity, town sewage system. The outbuildings have all been connected to electricity and some to water. Although not currently a listed building, we have been informed that this château could qualify for this status.
The Grounds:
The domain includes an iron entrance gate with gate house / house keeper / guest house (to renovate) and short driveway leading to the guard towers of the moat and through these into the inner courtyard. There is a sizeable garden flanking the driveway on which planning permission has been granted for a pool to be installed.
Once inside the inner courtyard there are a number of ancillary buildings including a small house and towers. All are in various stages of restoration nearing completion.
